About the Course

This course offers an introductory exploration of leadership theory, tracing how key theories and models have developed over time and how they shape everyday practice in church contexts. Rather than promoting a single “right” approach, it helps you recognise the different stories about leadership embedded in resources and lived experience, and to place them in conversation with a biblical vision of power, service, and community. Along the way, you reflect on your own experiences of leading and being led, attend to dynamics like mutuality, psychological safety, and teaming well, and begin to experiment with practices that fit your context and convictions.

About Valerie Ling

Valerie Ling (M Clin Psych, M Leadership, PhD Candidate, MAPS) is a clinical psychologist and leadership consultant who has spent over two decades working at the intersection of mental health, ministry, and leadership sustainability. She is the founder of the Centre for Effective Serving and the Centre for Effective Living in Sydney, where she specialises in clergy wellbeing, burnout prevention, and psychosocially safe leadership systems. Valerie’s doctoral research focuses on psychosocial safety in faith-based leadership, and she is a sought-after supervisor, consultant, and speaker for pastors, missionaries, and Christian organisations. Bringing together evidence-based psychology, leadership research, and a theologically respectful approach to ministry, she designed this course to help Christian leaders think more clearly about leadership, care more deeply for their own wellbeing, and cultivate healthier, more sustainable cultures in their churches and ministries.
